A Travel Guide to Blackpool

Blackpool is Britain`s most popular seaside resort - famous for its tower, Pleasure Beach theme park and three piers (North Pier, Central Pier and South Pier). Its prominence grew during the 19th century when large numbers of families from industrial towns and cities of northern England would visit the resort and spend their summer holidays there. Since then, Blackpool`s wealth has depended on its mass tourism, which accounts for a substantial proportion of the local economy.

A popular time to visit Blackpool is between September and November - this is when the famous illuminations take place and when the long promenade hosts a magnificent displays of ornamental lights. The 2010 illuminations were scheduled from September 3rd to November 7th.

January is the quietest time of the year, while the busiest month is during the summer holidays in August - when many residents from the cities of Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds travel to Blackpool for day trips and holidays.

The Pleasure Beach - famous for rides such as the Avalanche, Pepsi Max Big One and the Infusion, is particularly popular with the younger crowd but can be fun for all ages. In 2010 the park opened its doors on February 13th (weekends only until the end of March) and will close for the winter on November 7th. There are more amusement rides located on South Pier, Central Pier and North Piers ( which is open from March to November) and various bars and restaurants with varying price ranges.

However, if you are looking for something a little more subtle then you can take a trip to a pantomime in Blackpool Tower, the Grand Theatre, the Pleasure Beach, the Opera House and the Winter Gardens. Acts performing at the Winter Gardens in 2010 included Ronan Keating, Chippendales and Roy Chubby Brown.

If you are comfortable with heights, a trip up to the famous tower should not go amiss either. Climb the 518 foot tower and witness superb panoramic views all the way to the Lake District and Snowdonia in North Wales. Inside the tower kids can enjoy Jungle Jim`s Towering Adventureland and the whole family will love the Tower Aquarium and the Jurassic Walk and 3D Cinema as well.

Getting to Blackpool is very easy - from the M6 you will enter Blackpool`s very own motorway entrance - the M55. This will then take you directly into the centre where you can park the car and use the trams for getting along the two and a half mile stretch of tourist attractions.

The journey to Blackpool takes between three and four hours from London, approximately two hours from Birmingham, an hour or less from Manchester and around three hours from Edinburgh.
